Leave that beautiful bandage your tattooer put on you for a on MINIMUM of 3-4 hours, or until you are home for the evening and able to wash it. If you were tattooed later in the day (and the bandage is secure), you should leave it on until the following morning.
When you remove the bandage, wash thoroughly with hot water, antibacterial soap, and your hand (not a washcloth!) -repeat at least twice a day.
Do not re-cover or re-wrap it at this point.
Day 3 or 4, or whenever your tattoo begins to scab and dry out, you may begin putting a SMALL amount of moisturizer, 1-2 times a day. A little dab'll do ya!
Use Aquaphor ointment, a plain unscented hand-lotion (Lubriderm, Cetaphil, etc), or shea butter/cocoa butter. Only moisturize when it feels dry or tight, otherwise leave it alone.
You can stop moisturizing after roughly 2 weeks. Remember, the tattoo will mostly take care of itself, so overall, less is more.
Tattoos are the same type of trauma to the skin as a cut/scratch/abrasion.
Scabbing is completely normal.
DO NOT PICK OR SCRATCH or help the scabs come off in any way. They will come off on their own.
After the scabs start falling off naturally, your tattoo will go through a brief flakey/shiny phase (similar to a sunburn).
The tattoo will look different throughout the healing process, it will not be completely healed and settled for at least 3-4 weeks, so please be patient with it the entire time.
Avoid direct sun exposure on the tattoo during healing.
Outside of showering, do not submerge/soak the tattoo for at least 2 weeks (no baths, swimming, etc).
It is important to avoid activities that could expose the tattoo to dirt and bacteria, such as gardening. Wait a minimum of 2 weeks before getting in the dirt. If the tattoo is not fully healed by then wait till it is.
Your Pet's Mouth, hair and dander can carry bacteria and allergens. If they get stuck to your weeping tattoo, they can easily cause an infection or a painful rash.
An excited jump, a playful paw, or an accidental scratch from your pet can be a disaster for a new tattoo. A scratch can rip off healing scabs, which will pull ink out of your skin and can lead to permanent scarring.
For the first 3-4 nights keep pets out of your bed. When you are around your pet for the first 2 weeks wear a protective barrier like clean, soft, and loose-fitting clothing over the tattoo. A loose long-sleeved shirt or sweatpants are perfect. This prevents direct contact and stops most fur and dander from reaching the tattoo.
If you do have contact between your pet and your new tattoo wash gently with warm water and soap.
Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of infection which include, but are not limited to, redness, swelling, tenderness around your new tattoo, red streaks going from the tattoo towards the heart, elevated body temperature, or purulent drainage from your tattoo.
While mild irritation is common, seek medical attention if you notice infection signs like pus, rash, or worsening redness and swelling.
